The city was founded three times: April 1, 1943, July 1, 1955, and October 4, 2004. As of March 31, 2012, the city has an estimated population of 53,946, with 22,986 households and a population density 586.75 of persons per km². The total area is 91.94 km². The name Hikari itself means "brilliance" or "light" in Japanese. It is connected by railroad with a train station and route 188. Hikari is bounded with Yanai, Kudamatsu, Shunan, Iwakuni and Tabuse in the Kumage District.
